Asbestos in older NZ homes: what you need to know
Asbestos · 30 May 2026

Asbestos was widely used in New Zealand building materials until the early 2000s. It's safe when undisturbed โ but renovation or demolition can release harmful fibres.
Where it hides
Roofing, cladding, textured ceilings, vinyl flooring and pipe lagging are all common places asbestos may be present in older homes.
Test before you touch
Before any building work, arrange independent testing. If asbestos is found, a licensed team can remove it safely with air monitoring and a clearance certificate.
